Oh, how she had hated that wretched pipe. That strip of wood perpetually hanging from Mr. Holmes’s mouth, emitting thick smoke and an even thicker stench. At least Dr. Watson had the decency to look somewhat contrite when smoking in her presence, but his flatmate would only wave her away dismissively if she frowned disapprovingly at him.

Once, however, both men had left London abruptly on a case, and she found the pipe by the detective’s chair, filled with that odorous shag tobacco he always insisted on.

Curiosity.

Smiling wickedly, she brought it to her mouth and struck a match.

They trampled into the house, a dozen of them at least: muddy, laughing and half-starved. The tallest – the leader, she presumed – never once failed to tip his ragged hat and give a cheery “Evenin’, Missus!” as the entire troop stampeded up the stairs to Mr. Holmes’s rooms.

Since her lodger was not what one would call effusive, she found it surprising how, whenever the Irregulars appeared, his mouth always set in a warm smile, his eyes crinkling with geniality.

As they ducked out, murmuring their goodbyes politely, his smile faded, and she felt a sorry tug at her heart.
