The tears simply would not stop falling.

"Doctor Watson," she said hoarsely, desperate to regain control, "surely you must be mistaken."

He shook his head sadly, his own grief only too apparent. "I'm afraid not, Mrs. Hudson. He is gone, and I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you."

Shaking, she stood from her chair and fumbled towards the doorway. "Go to your rooms, Doctor. I'll bring up some tea."

"Mrs. Hudson, that really isn't necessary."

She ignored his demurs and slunk into the kitchen, savoring this last taste of routine before facing what seemed unbearable.

Mr. Hudson had been a good man. A bit careless with money, perhaps; a tad too fond of cheap liquor, but on the whole, a decent enough fellow. He provided for her sufficiently, kept her warm at night, and his bouts of impetuous immaturity were, undoubtedly, not far from what raising a child would have actually been like. In lieu of little ones, she doted on him, comforting, consoling, tidying up after his perpetual messes.

"Oh, Martha," he would say almost absently, smiling. "You are a childless mother."

His smile, she realized, was always as apologetic as it was sad.
