She had done her best not to bat an eye when he first entered the door of the flat, his dark, sharp eyes critical of everything they took in. She watched him examine the rooms with a military precision, getting on his knees and running a long, thin finger along a baseboard, sticking his head into the fireplace, sniffing the curtains delicately.
Every so often, he would cast her a glance, a brief moment of eye contact, but he never returned her polite smile.
“Pray,” he finally said, “how strongly would you object to small explosions, possibly with odiferous consequences?”
